Communicative Gestures Benefit Communicators
نویسنده
چکیده
Gestures are an integral part of speaking. They allow expression of thoughts that are difficult to articulate. They promote fluency of speech. Can gestures also facilitate reasoning, problem solving, and other cognitive processes? In the present task, people assembled an object and then made a video explaining how to assemble, using speech and gesture or gesture alone. A control group merely reassembled. Explainers reassembled the object more accurately than controls, and gesturers more accurately than those who both spoke and gestured. This suggests that teaching is an effective way to learn and that gestures facilitate assembly performance, a finding attributable to the compatibility of gestures and assembly actions. Explainers decomposed the object into parts and exhibited or pointed to them. They broke the action into steps. The critical difference was that gesturers modeled action but speakers modeled structure. Action information is essential for assembly performance.

Gestures Augment Learning in Communicators and Recipients
Communicators explained how to assemble an object or how to get from A to B to recipients, using speech and gesture freely, or restricted to gesture alone. Explanations were examined for uses of gesture and speech in conveying semantic content as well as narrative structure. For both tasks, communicators who explained using only gestures performed better than those using gestures and speech. Re...
متن کاملDiscourse Coherence and Gesture Interpretation
In face-to-face conversation, communicators orchestrate multimodal contributions that meaningfully combine the linguistic resources of spoken language and the visuo-spatial affordances of gesture. In this paper, we characterise this meaningful combination in terms of the COHERENCE of gesture and speech. Descriptive analyses illustrate the diverse ways gesture interpretation can supplement and e...
متن کاملEffects of Gesture on the Perception of Psychological Anthropomorphism: A Case Study with a Humanoid Robot
Previous work has shown that gestural behaviors affect anthropomorphic inferences about artificial communicators such as virtual agents. In an experiment with a humanoid robot, we investigated to what extent gesture would affect anthropomorphic inferences about the robot. Particularly, we examined the effects of the robot’s hand and arm gestures on the attribution of typically human traits, lik...
متن کاملCerebral coherence between communicators marks the emergence of meaning.
How can we understand each other during communicative interactions? An influential suggestion holds that communicators are primed by each other's behaviors, with associative mechanisms automatically coordinating the production of communicative signals and the comprehension of their meanings. An alternative suggestion posits that mutual understanding requires shared conceptualizations of a signa...
متن کاملGetting to the Point: The Influence of Communicative Intent on the Kinematics of Pointing Gestures
In everyday communication, people not only use speech but also hand gestures to convey information. One intriguing question in gesture research has been why gestures take the specific form they do. Previous research has identified the speaker-gesturer’s communicative intent as one factor shaping the form of iconic gestures. Here we investigate whether communicative intent also shapes the form o...
